DESCRIPTION
No windows, just a flip-top L 2’6” W 1’6” H 8” wood box with hog entrance and internal 90 degree turn for a wind break and predator deterrence. More info... A hedgehog would just as likely sleep in a cardboard box, pile of leaves, or on concrete under a metal shelf unit as they would one of these relative palaces. So, if you don’t have a hutch, try simple alternatives. I used a basic cardboard box with a carpet tile for a rainproof roof successfully for a whole summer. Add a little hay/leaves - untouched by humans, cat food kibble, and an ever-present shallow water-filled bowl. N.B. hogs will stand in and on the rim of a bowl of water/kibble so use heavy or secured bowls. Hogs' sense of smell is 6 X greater than ours so they will smell food -and even water- a way off. Being transient visitor-roamers hogs may just stay a few hours, if at all, after eating. Look out for s**t (yes, scat) and messy food remains. That is when a PIR camera would provide educational entertainment. Unfortunately, hedgehogs have no sense of hygiene compared to mice and rats, so tactical mucking out is required… Put newspaper down first, then add bedding. Hoglets (babies) in autumn stand little chance of surviving the winter without help.
